How Credit Card Skimming Works

Thieves Use Credit Card Skimming to Steal Your Data

Victims of credit card skimming are completely blindsided by the theft. They notice fraudulent charges or money withdrawn from their accounts, but their credit and debit cards never left their possession. How did the theft happen?

Credit Card Skimming

Credit card skimming is a type of credit card theft where crooks use a small device to steal credit card information in an otherwise legitimate credit or debit card transaction. When a credit or debit card is swiped through a skimmer, the device captures and stores all the details stored in the card's magnetic stripe.

The stripe contains the credit card number, expiration date, and the credit card holder's full name. Thieves use the stolen data to make fraudulent charges either online or with a counterfeit credit card.

Skimming at ATMs and Gas Stations

Credit card skimmers are often placed over the card swipe mechanism on ATMs and gas stations, but the skimmers can be placed over almost any type of credit card reader. With ATMs, criminals may also place a small, undetectable camera nearby to record your PIN. This gives the thief all the information needed to make fake cards and withdraw cash from the cardholder's checking account.1

Skimming at Restaurants or Retail

Occasionally, some retail and restaurant workers who handle credit cards are recruited to be part of a skimming ring. These workers use a handheld device to skim your credit card during a normal transaction. For example, we routinely hand our cards over to waiters to cover the check for a restaurant. The waiter walks away with our credit cards and, for a dishonest waiter, it becomes the perfect opportunity to swipe the credit card through a skimmer without being detected.

How Thieves Use the Information

Once the victim's credit card information is stolen, thieves will either create cloned credit cards to make purchases in-store, use the account to make online purchases, or sell the information on the internet. Victims of credit card skimming are often unaware of the theft until they notice unauthorized charges on their account, have their card unexpectedly declined, or receive an overdraft notification in the mail.

How to Spot a Credit Card Skimmer

Credit card skimming devices are crafted to blend in seamlessly with the machine it's placed on. Unless you're specifically looking for a skimming device, you may not notice anything out of the ordinary.

Warning: While you should look for credit card skimmers anywhere you swipe your credit card, gas stations and remote ATMs are more likely to be altered.

Becoming familiar with the look and feel of regular credit card readers can help you detect when there's something out of place. There are some tell-tale signs that a credit-card skimmer is installed. A credit card reader that sticks out far past the panel is an indicator because skimmers are designed to fit over the existing credit card reader. This is most recognizable when an additional part seems to be affixed to the rest of the credit card reader.

At a gas station, you can compare a suspicious credit card reader to the readers at nearby pumps. If something looks out of the ordinary, avoid paying at the pump. Pay inside or go to another gas station.

If a skimmer is installed, the credit card reader will appear loose or move when jiggled. The credit card reader should be securely in place. Moving parts are a sign the reader has been tampered with or that a skimming device has been affixed to the existing reader.

Gas stations often place a security label across the gas pump that lets you know if the cabinet panel on the fuel dispenser has been tampered with. When intact, the label has a flat red, blue, or black background. However, once the seal has been broken, the words "Void Open" appears in white. If the seal missing, displays the message or is loose, it's a sign that someone without authorization has accessed the cabinet. Let the gas station attendant know and do not use the credit card machine at that pump.

Warning: Many people don't take the time to look over a fuel pump or an ATM. Complacency is a thief's ally. Take a few moments to inspect the machine before trusting that someone else has inspected it.

In addition to a card skimming device, thieves may place a fake keypad on top of the real one to capture your keystrokes. This way they can capture your pin or billing zip code in addition to your credit or debit card details. If the keys seem hard to push, eject your card and use another ATM. Use a bank-operated ATM, which is less likely to have a skimmer, rather than an ATM at a store or gas station.

How to Prevent and Detect Credit Card Skimming

Thankfully, many banks and credit card issuers are becoming better at detecting fraudulent transactions and may not process suspicious charges until you verify that you initiated the transaction.

Simply using your credit card puts you at risk of becoming a credit card skimming victim. Catching fraudulent charges related to a skimming incident requires you to watch your accounts frequently. Monitor your checking and credit card accounts online at least weekly and immediately report any suspicious activity to your bank or credit card issuer.

Here are a few more tips for avoiding credit card skimming.

Watch where you shop. Restaurants, bars, and gas stations seem to be the places where credit card incidents happen most frequently. Retail store self-checkouts and ATMs, especially standalone ATMs (those that aren't at the bank) are also places that skimmers can be found.

Check ATMs before using them. At ATMs, skimmers often place a camera within view of the keypad to steal your PIN. These cameras are often tiny and difficult to detect. When you're using an ATM, cover your hand as you type your PIN to keep a camera from catching a view of what you're typing.

Don't hand your card to someone for cleaning. Thieves will claim to clean the magnetic strip on your credit card to help it work better. These thieves simply swipe your credit card through a credit card skimmer and take your credit card information.

How to Report a Credit Card Skimming Loss

If you think you've been a victim of credit card skimming, contact your bank or credit card issuer even if you haven't spotted any fraudulent charges. The sooner you report your suspicions, the more you shield yourself from the liability of unauthorized charges. Providing as much detail as possible about the location of the skimmer (e.g., the gas station you visited with pump number, or the ATM location) can help the bank prevent future losses.

Alert the Federal Trade Commission and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. These government agencies often work to break up large credit card skimming rings.

Romance scam #Nigerian gang busted by joint forces

Thai police have joined their Malaysian counterparts to bust a Nigerian gang operating online romance scams, the same gang that fled Thailand a year ago to set up in Kuala Lumpur.

Thai immigration police head Maj-Gen Surachate Hakparn, in his capacity as deputy director of the Thailand's Action Taskforce for Information Technology Crime Suppression (TACTICS), on Wednesday led his team to join with Malaysian economic crime busters to search seven locations in Kuala Lumpur. At the same time, Thai police raided three locations in Thailand that allegedly had links to the gang.

The operation in Kuala Lumpur led to the arrest of seven Nigerians, all of whom were wanted for alleged fraud in Thailand, and seven female Thai accomplices.

Officers also seized computers and cell phones showing chat messages with victims, many of whom were in process of being convinced to wire money, and some scripts to persuade victims.

The romance scams would usually involve criminals using bogus white male identities to woo and later persuade women to wire money to pay an import tariff and fee for the delivery of overseas “gifts".

Surachate said TACTICS had come down hard on this gang, prompting the criminals to flee to Malaysia about a year ago. The gang set up their new base and resumed the romance scams, he said.
Surachate claimed that this gang had duped people of nearly Bt100 million in total.

Last year, TACTICS co-operated with their foreign counterparts to make nine arrests in seven countries.

7 #Myanmar workers rescued from sugarcane farm in #Thailand

Thai and Myanmar officials have rescued seven Myanmar nationals who were tricked into working for nothing on a sugar-cane farm in a forest in Kanchanaburi Province, Thailand.

According to the Myanmar Aid Alliance Committee (AAC) and Myanmar embassy officials, the seven were rescued Wednesday by Thai officials, including members of the Department of Special Investigation (DSI), immigration and army.

Speaking to The Myanmar Times on Thursday, AAC member Ko Ye Min said “The workers were asked by a Myanmar labour broker to work at a sugar-cane factory in Thailand.

“But the broker had sold them as slaves. They had to work without pay, their cell phones were taken away and kept by the farm owner, and they were under constant guard to prevent them from escaping.”
.
.
The victims are all from Bago Region, five of them from Sat Su village in Waw township and two from Htan Tapin village in Taungoo township.

The victims managed to escape on foot from the farm and called the AAC for help.
According to the seven, the broker had threatened them by saying the girls would be sent to brothels and the men to work on fishing boats in Thailand.

The AAC reported the matter to the DSI, which, after consultations with Myanmar embassy officials, mounted a rescue operation and saved the seven from the forest, Ko Ye Min said.
“We [the AAC] and the embassy managed to send them home. All the victims are back in Myanmar,” Ko Ye Min confirmed on Friday.

Embassy officials said the broker took the victims to Thailand via an illegal route two months ago.

The officials told The Myanmar Times on Thursday that they had sent back all the workers to Myanmar and Thai officials will investigate and take action against the broker for human trafficking.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Thet Naung of the Myanmar Anti Human-Trafficking Police Squad said they had received news that the DSI had saved the workers. “But, we have not got the official version from the Thai side. We will speak to the workers when they get back home. We will take legal action after we have investigated and have all the information on the matter from the workers,” he said on Friday.

An official of Waw township administrative department said on Friday he had no knowledge of any human trafficking.

Praying for London

Pray For London Memes & Tributes To Share In Solidarity With Victims.
.
A van ploughed into pedestrians and several people were stabbed in central London on Saturday, leaving at least 20 casualties in what police called a "terrorist" attack days before a general election.
Armed police opened fire during two "terrorist incidents" at London Bridge and nearby Borough Market, a popular nightspot teeming with bars on a warm summer evening.
"We can confirm we have taken at least 20 patients to six hospitals across London," the London Ambulance Service said in a statement.
Witnesses described a van speeding into several pedestrians on London Bridge and then a knife-wielding man sprinting towards a bar packed with revellers enjoying a Saturday night out.
One witness described seeing five assailants and several people said they were locked inside pubs and restaurants by police and had to come out with their hands on their heads.
Italian photographer Gabriele Sciotto, who was watching the Champions League final at the Wheatsheaf pub in Borough Market, said he saw three men being shot just outside the pub.

In his picture, a man wearing combat trousers, with a shaved head and what looked like a belt with canisters attached to it could be seen on the ground with two more bodies behind him.
Pictures showed medical staff attending to apparent victims of the attack and a helicopter buzzing just metres over London bridge, one of the major arteries in the City business district.
Police responded rapidly with dozens of emergency vehicles and authorities led shellshocked members of the public away from the scene.
The attack came more than a week after a suicide bomber killed 22 people at a concert in the northern city of Manchester and days ahead of the June 8 election, where security is a major theme.
It also sparked harrowing memories of an attack on Westminster Bridge when 52-year-old British Muslim convert Khalid Masood rammed his car into pedestrians before crashing into the barriers surrounding parliament and then stabbing a police officer to death.
It is the latest in a string of attacks to hit Europe, including in Paris, Berlin and Saint Petersburg.

- 'Potential act of terrorism' -

Police said the first reports of a "vehicle in collision with pedestrians on London Bridge" came at 10:08pm local time ( 2108 ) and were quickly followed by "reports of stabbings in Borough Market," at the south end of the bridge.
"Armed officers responded and shots have been fired," police said.
Prime Minister Theresa May confirmed the "terrible incident in London" was being treated as "a potential act of terrorism."
She will hold an emergency ministerial meeting later on Sunday and Facebook activated its safety check function for people in London to let their loved ones know they are safe.
US President Donald Trump offered his help, tweeting "WE ARE WITH YOU. GOD BLESS!"
French President Emmanuel Macron said France was "more than ever at Britain's side."
US pop star Ariana Grande, whose concert in Manchester was the scene of a terror attack last week that claimed 22 lives, tweeted: "Praying for London".

- 'Her throat had been cut' -

Witnesses on London Bridge reported seeing a van mounting the pavement and hitting pedestrians and a man with a knife running.
"There was a van that crashed into the fences on London Bridge. And then there was a man with a knife, he was running. He came down the stairs and went to the bar," Dee, 26, who was visibly in shock and declined to give her last name, told AFP.
BBC reporter Holly Jones, who was there at the time of the incident, said she saw a van driven by a man travelling "at about 50 miles (80 kilometres) an hour".
She said about five people were being treated for injuries after the vehicle mounted the pavement and hit them.
"There's several police boats with torchlights searching the Thames at the moment," she told BBC radio.
She added that she saw a man, who had his shirt off and was in handcuffs, being arrested by police.
Alex Shellum at the Mudlark pub near the scene of the attack said a woman had come into the bar "bleeding heavily from the neck".
"It appeared that her throat had been cut," he told the BBC.

- 'Large blade' -

Another witness, who gave his name as Alessandro, also told BBC radio that he saw a van strike several people on London Bridge.
"I saw this van going left and right, left and right, trying to catch as many people as he could. And people just tried to get out of the way of the van.
"Then I tried to help people, wounded people."
Husband and wife Ben and Natalie told BBC Radio 5 Live they were outside Borough Market when they witnessed the incident there.
Ben said: "We saw people running away and then I saw a man in red with a large blade, at a guess 10 inches long, stabbing a man, about three times.
"It looked like the man had been trying to intervene, but there wasn't much he could do. He was being stabbed quite coldly and he slumped to the ground."
Ben said the man then walked towards the Southwark Tavern. He said they saw a metal chair being thrown towards the man.
"Then we heard three gunshots, definitely gunshots, and we ran."
